Question: “I bought a strand of lovely green beads, with specks of what appears to be fushia color. They were sold to me as “cuprite”. Another vendor also had these beads and called them cuprite as well. I’ve heard of the stone, but wasn’t familiar. I have the Crystal Ally Deck, and other books as well and I suspect that they are not cuprite. If they weren’t so light, I might think that they were ruby zoizite. Can you help me out, Please?”

My Answer: Cuprite can come in a variety of reds ranging from a ruby-like purplish red to bright orange red. ( See Cuprite information and photos here.) And it’s often found with chrysocolla which could possibly the the background material in your beads. So your beads may or may not be cuprite. Many times, stones are mis-labeled when they are cut in China or India, so all the people who receive them from the same cutters have the same name whether it’s accurate or not. Only a gemologist or scientist who tests the stones themselves can be completely accurate when identifying minerals.
