Valentine's Legend
The most widely accepted Valentine's legend is of St. Valentine's martyrdom. Emperor Claudious, during the time of the Roman Empire, was trying to raise a large army. He abolished marriage so that men would enlist since they could not marry and stay home. One priest, known as Valentine kept perfoming secret marriage ceremonies in spite of the law, and many couples in love came to him for just this. Eventually, he was caught and sentenced to death. While in jail, he became friends with the jailkeeper's daughter. On the day of his execution, he left a note for her, thanking her for her friendship, and signed it "Love from your Valentine." He was martyred on February 14, 269 A.D. |
