Cabochons, or cabs, are used extensively for making jewelry and are used in crystal healing. A cabochon is a cut and polished stone that has a flat back and a rounded dome (top, front), like the rainbow moonstone in the photo at the top of the page. Some of the most beautiful ancient jewelry is made with cabochons, including astounding royal east Indian jewelry, and the breastplate of Aaron is said to have been made with cabochon stones also.

In jewelry making, cabs are used for a softer or antique look, with semi-precious opaque stones, and in many cases for a more economical low price than faceted stones. Also, there are many fascinating designer cabochons in stones that are not normally faceted.

In crystal healing sessions, cabs have the benefit of being flat on the bottom so they don't try to roll away and aren't pointy so they don't poke anyone. The polished and rounded shapes also tend to give a more diffuse energy which can be less energetically disturbing to the person receiving the crystal healing session.
